Notes for Robert W. GUNN

General Note
He invented a type of drill bit used for drilling oil wells, and he and his wife Edith were able to live a gracious and genteel life on the royalties. They had a beach house at Newport Beach, California and a home in Pasadena.

Had no children, but in later years raised a niece, Florence (daughter of Meta and Kenneth C. C. Gunn).

Florence developed rheumatoid athritis as a young woman, and became an invalid. She was informally adopted by Robert and Edith, who had no children of their own. She lived with them for the rest of her life, painting her beautiful oils and doing wood carvings.

Birth Note
The 1900 Federal Census lists his birth date as "Aug 1871".

Residence Note
Robert W. was living in the household of his brother-in-law, John H. Crew, at the time of the 1900 Federal Census.
