He invented a type of drill bit used for drilling oil wells, and he and his wife Edith were
able to live a gracious and genteel life on the royalties. They had a beach house at Newport
Beach, California and a home in Pasadena.|
Had no children, but in later years raised
a niece, Florence (daughter of Meta and Kenneth C. C. Gunn).
Florence developed rheumatoid
athritis as a young woman, and became an invalid. She was informally adopted by Robert and
Edith, who had no children of their own. She lived with them for the rest of her life, painting
her beautiful oils and doing wood carvings.
