MARTIN -- ESTHER L. MARTIN November 30, 1910 - May 10, 2006 Esther L. Martin, 95, beloved mother, grandmother, aunt, and sister, was born November 30, 1910 in Paguate, NM, went home to be with her Creator on Wednesday, May 10,2006, after a sudden illness, while residing in Alpine, UT. Mrs. Martin was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph P. Martin; her parents, Lolita Alonzo Pacheco and Jose Pacheco of Paguate, NM; brothers, Harry Pacheco and George Blue Spruce Sr.; sisters, Nina Pratt, Dora Paisano, Grace Scott, and Irene Nagurski; son-in-law, Dan Atsye; grandson, Joe Atsye; and great-granddaughter, Bella Curry. She is survived by her daughters, Agnes R. Atsye of Albuquerque, (Elizabeth) Jean Martinez and husband, Sigfreido Martinez of Englewood, CO, Florence C. Lilly and husband, John G. Lilly of Alpine, UT; nine grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; plus a large extended circle of family and friends who loved and will miss her. Mrs. Martin was raised with her brothers and sisters in the village of Paguate (Pueblo of Laguna), NM. She attended the Paguate Day School and was a graduate of Albuquerque Indian School (AIS) in 1930, along with her favorite cousin, Josephine Ray and their best friend, Ethel Washburn. She and her husband, along with their three daughters, traveled and moved to Bluewater, NM, Yuma and Phoenix, AZ and Los Angeles, CA, due to his employment and they finally settled in Barstow, CA in 1942. While living in Barstow she worked as a domestic for several doctors, participated in the "Indian Camp" and Laguna Colony of Barstow activities, attended their daughter's and grandchildren's school and sports activities, especially Little League games. Mr. Martin retired from Santa Fe Railroad in 1972, and they moved to Albuquerque in January of 1973. While living in Albuquerque, she loved to visit and talk about the "old days" with her brother, sisters, and their families as well as her relations throughout New Mexico. She and her husband were dedicated Altamont Little League fans in the mid to late '70s, when the field was located on the property of Academy High School. Both she and Mr. Martin continued to travel back and forth to Southern California for medical care and to spend time with their daughter and grandchildren who still resided there and later to Colorado and Utah. In 1990, one year after the passing of Mr. Martin, Esther went to live with her oldest daughter, Agnes and her husband where she continued to live until the fall of 2002. She then spent time between Colorado with her middle daughter, Jean and family, and her youngest daughter, Florence and her family in Utah until her passing. Her family, especially her grandchildren and baseball were her passions. Her unconditional love, support and encouragement for her grandchildren will always be appreciated and never forgotten. She remembered all their birthdays and had many stories to share about each one. She loved the Atlanta Braves baseball team, knew all their stats, and talked about the players like they were family. Her favorite player was Dale Murphy. Mrs. Martin was a member of Casa Blanca Presbyterian Church, Casa Blanca, NM and Sandia Presbyterian Church in Albuquerque. A Funeral Service will be held at Sandia Presbyterian Church, 10704 Paseo del Norte NE in Albuquerque, on Friday, May 19, 2006 at 11:00 a.m., with Reverend Dewey Johnson presiding. Lunch and fellowship will follow the Service also at Sandia Presbyterian Church. Burial will then take place at Sunset Memorial Park, 924 Menaul Blvd. NE. Pallbearers will be John G. Lilly, Danny Atsye, Everett Atsye, Perry Martinez, Jay Thorpe, and Shawn Spruce. Arrangements by Direct Funeral Services, 2919 4th St. NW, ABQ. 505-343-8008.
